Equality Of Educational Opportunity By James Coleman Essay

The issue of inequality in schools comes in many forms, whether it’s the inequality of money given to certain schools, or the issue of students not receiving the same education because of where they come from. Many students drop out of school because they feel they can’t continue to achieve, which I feel is awful because everyone deserves to have an education in which they reach their full potential. Today’s society is all about trying to make the world equal for everyone, but no one wants to try to implement the changes that would make it a fair world. Students shouldn’t have to worry about getting an education based on what their socioeconomic background is, or because of what race they are, but sadly, that’s the type of world that occupies the American society and its educational system. The Concept of Equality of Educational Opportunity by James Coleman discusses what Coleman believes to be the disparity between the educational success of lower class students versus middle class students in the American educational system. His arguments are widely controversial, even though they were asked for by the president of the United States. James Banks’s The Multicultural Curriculum: Issues, Approaches, and Models take one some of the same ideas of Coleman s report and extend on the issue of the curriculum being whitewashed and non inclusive towards other ethnicities of students.
